Synopsis: This book tells the true story of Mileva Marić, a brilliant young physicist who married, and fell under the shadow of, her husband Albert Einstein. In a time when it was taboo for women to study or attend university, Mileva fights for a place in a male dominated field, leaving her home country of Serbia to study at a Polytechnic in Germany. She leaves her family, vowing to keep her head down and to study hard in Germany.

However, while in Germany, she meets the enigmatic Mr. Einstein. She falls head over heels in love with him, and he loves her too.  They promise to marry, but Einstein continues to put it off. As Einstein begins to pass her work off as his own, she is pulled further and further under his control.

My thoughts: I found this book to be well written, poignant, and shocking. Reading it, I could not believe that Einstein, a man so revered the scientific community, and by the public, could be so controlling and unpleasant. It only goes to show just how male-dominated society was at the time. This book also made wonder what discoveries Mileva might have made, had she not been stifled by Einstein.

I sympathised with the main character from the very start of this book, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I would recommend it to anyone looking to read a good, accurate historical novel, or find out more about hidden female figures.
